-Harry S. Truman
-Born: May 8th 1884 in Lamar, MO.
-Youth: Spent on his family farm in Independence, MO. Was the first of 3 children. Didn't attend college but worked many jobs after high school.
-Schooling: Independence High School (now William Chrisman High School.
-Military Career: Was 33, 2 years older then the age limit of the draft during World War I. He helped organize the National Guard regiment.
-Business Career: Owned a clothing store with a long time war friend who happened to be Jewish. The store closed from bankruptcy. Later Truman paid it all off.
-Family: Margaret Daniel Truman (daughter) Elizabeth Virginia Truman (wife and went by Bess)
-Senator: Was elected United States Senator in 1934.
-Vice Presidency: Was elected Vice President in November of 1944 and took the oath of office on January 20, 1945. He served 82 days before Roosevelt died of suffering a massive heart attack.
-Presidential term: April 12, 1945 - January 20, 1953.
-During Presidency: Ended World War II with Atomic Bombs. Also entered the United States into the Korean War on June 30, 1950.
-Died: December 26th 1973.

Harry S. Truman was born in Lamar, Missouri on May 8th, 1884. Young Harry attended public school in Independence, Missouri. He graduated college in 1901. After he graduated he worked as a timekeeper for a railroad construction contractor. After that he was a clerk in 2 different banks in Kansas City. In 1906 Harry returned to his family farm in Grandview, Missouri to help his father. He worked as a farmer for 10 years. In between 1906 and 1911 Harry served in the National Guard. When World War I started Harry helped organize the 2nd Regiment of Missouri Field Artillery. That Regiment was quickly called into Federal Service as the 129th Field Artillery and sent to France. He was then Promoted Captain and was given command of the Battery D. He and his unit saw action. After the war Harry joined the reserves, rising eventually to the rank of colonel. He tried to recruit back into the Army on active duty for the outbreak of World War II. But a General Chief of Staff declined his
offer to serve.
On June 28, 1919, Harry married Bess Wallace. He had known her since his childhood. They had one child. Mary Margaret. She was born on February 17, 1924. From 1919 to 1922 Harry ran a men's clothing store in Kansas City with a long time friend he served with, Eddie Jacobson. In the post war recession the store failed. Harry barely avoided bankruptcy. Through determination over many years he paid off his share of the stores debts.
Harry was elected in 1922, to be one of the 3 judges of the Jackson County Court. Harry's duties were more administrative then judicial. Harry built a reputation for honesty and efficiency in the management of county affairs. In 1924 Harry was defeated for reelection. Although he won and election as presiding judge in the Jackson County Court in 1926. He won reelection in 1930.
Harry Truman was elected to United States Senate in 1934. He had amazing roles in this position. He was reelected in 1940. He put together his own committee which was called the Truman Committee. This committee had considerable success to insure that defense contractors delivered to the nation quality goods and fair prices.
Truman was nominated to run for Vice President with Franklin D. Roosevelt in July 1944. On January 20th 1945 he took the Vice President Oath. 82 days later after President Roosevelt's death Truman was sworn in as the nations' 33rd President. Truman then called his first year as president a "year of decisions."
Harry's first 2 months in the office. he over saw the ending of the war in Europe. He participated in a conference at Potsdam, Germany. While at that conference he governed the defeat against Germany as well as set some ground work for the final stage of the war against Germany. On August 6th and 9th in 1945 Truman approved the dropping of 2 atomic bombs on Japan. Japan then finally surrendered onAugust 14th. The first year of Truman's presidency not on,y included this, but also founded the United Nations and the development with the Soviet Union.
In all honesty Harry S. Truman was one of the greatest Presidents the United States had. He created relationships with many people and military's in many other countries. He would do anything in his way just to make the country we live in today better. In 1948 he won reelection. People all across the U.S. were expecting him to be defeated and pretty much everybody predicted it. But Harry Truman's speech in his campaign did it all for him. He talked a lot about the issues that were going on at the time of 1948.
in 1953 Harry S. Truman left the presidency and retired back to Independence. With nearly 2 decades of his life remaining he spent his days reading, writing, lecturing, and taking long walks. He founded his own library which opened its doors to the public to give everyone a glimpse of his life and career. It is still standing today. Harry S. Truman died on December 26, 1972. His wife, Bess Truman died on October 18, 1982. They are buried side by side in the library's courtyard.
